An advanced medical procedure used to reduce swelling and pain in and around the neck and lower back areas. Most individuals report less pain and increased mobility over days, weeks or months.
A lumbar epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a pain relief option for certain causes of chronic low back pain. We inject an anti-inflammatory medication, a steroid or corticosteroid, into the epidural space around your low back spinal nerves. This is usually most effective at providing pain relief from a herniated disk or spinal stenosis.
The main goal of epidural injections is to mitigate chronic pain from irritation or inflammation of spinal nerve roots in your low back. This called the lumbar region of your spine. Irritation and inflammation are due to certain conditions or injuries. Chronic pain in this area is called lumbar radiculopathy, which radiates down from your low back to your hips, legs and feet. Epidural injections are among the most common therapeutic treatments for managing radicular pain.
Back pain is the fifth most common reason people seek medical care in the United States. Up to 25% of people (one in four) describe experiencing low back pain with leg pain that travels down below their knees (known as radicular pain) each year.
